Marriage License FAQ

NEW JERSEY

You can begin by printing out the New Jersey Application for a Marriage License but DO NOT sign the form as your signature must be witnessed by the local registrar.

NEW YORK STATE
The process for a NY State marriage license is the same as New Jersey listed above except:

  • The application must be filled out in person
  • You can apply at any town or city clerk in the state
  • The fee is $40
  • If either of the couple is under 14 years old, a marriage license cannot be issued
  • If either of the couple is 14 or 15 years old, a written consent of both parents and a justice of the Supreme Court or judge of Family Court in the jurisdiction in which the application is made is required
  • If either of the couple is 16 or 17 years old, a written consent of both parents is required
  • The license is valid for 60 days after you get it

NEW YORK CITY

You can start the process of applying for a NYC marriage license online at:

The process for a New York City marriage license is the same as New Jersey listed above except:

  • Apply at the Office of the New York City Clerk
  • The fee is $35 (credit card or money order only)
  • The marriage license will be processed while you wait and you can take the papers with you that day
  • You are required to wait a full 24 hours after picking up the license to have the wedding ceremony
  • The marriage license is valid for 60 days after you get it

PENNSYLVANIA
The process for a PA marriage license is the same as New Jersey listed above except:

  • You apply in person at your nearest Marriage License Bureau of the Register of Wills
  • Fees vary from county to county in PA., Please call the county Register of Wills in which you will be applying for their fees and other requirements
  • Register of Wills county offices may require an appointment. Please call well in advance of the wedding to find out on what days and during what hours the clerk will be in the office
  • The marriage license is valid for 60 days after you get it
  • The license can be used in any county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
